Vauxhall Mokka GSe Unveiled

Vauxhall has launched the Mokka GSe, a performance-focused version of its compact electric SUV. As the first model in the company’s Grand Sport Electric (GSe) sub-brand, the GSe variant adds power, visual aggression, and sharper dynamics to the existing Mokka Electric.

Design and Styling

Visually, the Mokka GSe stands apart from the standard model. It features a lowered and widened stance, along with larger rally-style bumpers and black-and-yellow highlights. The car rides on 20-inch Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres, paired with 380 mm Alcon brakes that include yellow four-piston calipers.

There are also GSe badges around the exterior, a black roof, and design cues taken from Opel’s electric rally prototypes. While the changes are cosmetic in part, they also contribute to improved performance.

Powertrain and Battery

The Mokka GSe uses a 207 kW electric motor that delivers between 276 and 280 bhp and 345 Nm of torque to the front wheels. A mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential helps distribute the power during cornering. Acceleration from 0 to 62 mph is quoted at 5.9 seconds, with a top speed of 124 mph.

The 54 kWh battery is the same as in the regular Mokka Electric, though the GSe’s extra performance reduces the WLTP range to an estimated 200 miles. Charging specifications haven’t been confirmed, but they’re likely to match the standard car’s compatibility with rapid charging networks.

Suspension and Handling

Chassis changes include stiffer suspension, a lowered ride height, and revised steering. The aim is to deliver better feedback and cornering stability. The limited-slip differential and upgraded brakes further enhance driving control, particularly during spirited driving.

The ride is firmer compared to the regular Mokka, but that’s expected for a model focused more on handling than comfort.

Cabin and Features

Inside, the Mokka GSe adds Alcantara-trimmed sports seats with yellow stitching, and a flat-bottom steering wheel. Digital displays feature GSe-specific graphics showing live torque and power delivery.

Standard features from the regular Mokka Electric remain, including the central touchscreen and usual connectivity options.

Pricing and Competition

Expected to start at around £37,000, the Mokka GSe may qualify for the reintroduced £3,750 EV grant, depending on the final eligibility rules. That could put it in line with alternatives such as the Peugeot e-2008 GT, Hyundai Kona Electric N Line, and MG4 XPower, though each has its own focus and price point.

Summary

The Mokka GSe introduces a more aggressive and engaging take on the electric SUV format. It’s not the most spacious or longest-range EV available, but it may appeal to drivers looking for a more involving driving experience in a compact package.
