MG is really finding its feet in the UK car market, and it’s the brand’s electric cars that are playing a key part in its growing sales and success.
MG’s battery-powered MG5 estate and ZS EV SUV are proving some of the more popular EVs on sale today, and the firm has recently revised its ZS EV to enhance its appeal further. Here are five things you need to know about it…
It can go the distance
Previously, one of the ZS EV’s main weaknesses was its electric range. However, as part of MG’s recent updates, the powertrains have been revised, with customers able to choose between two powertrains – a 51.1kWh battery paired to a 174bhp electric motor and a 72.6kWh battery with a 154bhp electric motor.
It’s the latter model that’s predicted to be the best-seller, with MG claiming a range of 273 miles, though even the Standard Range car can muster up a claimed 198 miles between charges. Using a 100kW rapid charger, the battery can also be topped up to 80 per cent capacity in a respectable 42 minutes.
Generous standard equipment
MG prides itself on giving customers plenty for their money, and the ZS EV certainly delivers on this front.
As standard, entry-level SE models come with an impressive new 10.1-inch touchscreen, a full digital instrument cluster and a driver assistance package called ‘MG Pilot’. If you want a few more bells and whistles, the Trophy model brings a 360-degree parking camera, leather-style upholstery, a panoramic sunroof and a wireless smartphone charger to name just a few features.
Very practical
The regular petrol-powered ZS is already a very popular choice with families thanks to its spacious interior, and it’s pleasing to know that this EV version is no less practical.
In fact, it would make a terrific family car, with its 470-litre boot being a fantastic size for a car in this class – and much roomier than its opponents – and is completely unaffected by the conversion to electric. Loads of space in the rear seats also ensures passengers in the back will easily be able to get comfortable.
Great value for money
We’ve alluded to it already, but one of the best things about the ZS EV is its price. Though electric cars are always pricier to buy than their petrol equivalents, and this MG is no different, this roomy electric SUV is available at a similar price to what you’d pay for a small electric hatchback, such as Vauxhall Corsa-e.
Starting from £27,495 including the government grant, the Long Range model is even available for less than £30,000.
Attractive styling
Though the ZS EV might not be the most eye-catching car on the market, it’s always been a smart choice, and MG has also built on that with its recent update.
With all versions getting diamond-cut 17-inch alloy wheels as standard, along with LED lights at the front and rear, it remains a very modern-looking choice. MG has also worked to set it apart from the petrol ZS, with this EV now getting a new ‘stamped-effect’ grille that helps to give it extra style.
