Kia has revealed further details about its new second-generation Niro crossover, following its initial unveiling last year.
The new model features a significantly bolder design, with highlights including a new two-tone three-quarter pillar, a more aggressive-looking front end and new boomerang-shaped LED lights. These all help the Niro stand out far more than the current car.
Inside, the new model is roomier than before due to its greater dimensions, while Kia has also aimed to use a range of eco-friendly materials to improve the model’s sustainability. It also features Kia’s latest touchscreen interface, similar to that found on the electric EV6.
Now Kia has confirmed that – like the outgoing model – this new car will continue to be offered with a choice of electrified powertrains, including a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric model.
It’s the hybrid that will launch first, and which is the centre of attention here. Featuring a 1.6-litre petrol engine combined with a 32kW electric motor, the Niro puts out a maximum of 139bhp, while featuring a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Further details about the additional powertrains will be announced in due course.
The new model is also equipped with a ‘Green Drive Zone’ mode, which will automatically switch the car into electric drive when in a built-up area, or outside schools and hospitals.
New pieces of tech available on the Niro include a wide 10-inch head-up display and an ambient interior lighting feature that offers 74 different colours. Remote smart parking assist will also be available as an option, which lets you park the car remotely using the vehicle’s key fob.
The new Kia Niro is set to launch later in 2022.
