BMW’s X range is now broader than ever. Despite kicking off with the X5, the line-up has grown to include coupe-style models and more compact variants. These days, if you’re after a high-riding BMW, you’re spoilt for choice.
So, with so many models on offer, which one should you focus on? Well, let’s take a trip through the entire range to see what each one offers.
X1
Things get started with the X1. Though it might be the smallest car in the X range, the X1 packs a host of big-car touches to give it more presence on the road and a more commanding feel from inside the cabin.
You get a raised seating position which gives a great view of the road ahead, while a range of refined petrol and diesel engines ensure a silky-smooth driving experience.
X2
The X line-up moves into the crossover segment with the X2. With a more upright look than a traditional hatchback the X2 is an alternative option within the BMW range, but it’s kitted out with loads of premium features that you’d expect from the brand.
There’s even a sporty X2 M35i variant, bringing added performance courtesy of a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine.
X3
The X3 has been a mainstay in the BMW range for some time now, having appeared shortly after the X5 hit the scene. Encapsulating some of the feel of its larger stablemates but on a smaller platform, it’s easy to see why the X3 has proven so popular.
These days, the X3 is larger than ever, while high-performance ‘M’ versions bring added theatre and a whole lot of performance. There’s also an electric version, badged iX3.
X4
In keeping with the modern trend for coupe-style SUVs, the X4 is a sleeker and more dynamic-looking version of the X3. With a heavily raked roofline, it’s got a distinctive design, yet a classy interior and plenty of features mean it backs up these looks with a good amount of substance.
Again, a sporty M variant means that should you want a go-faster X4, you’ve got an option.
X5
The X5 represents genesis for the X range. After all, it was BMW’s first SUV, and given its combination of a high ride height but a premium feel, it has proven popular for many years now.
The latest X5 is by far the most technology-packed to date, with a large central screen and all manner of connected services ensuring it feels particularly up-to-date.
X6
In a similar vein to the smaller X4, the X6 is a sleeker and more dynamic-looking version of the X5. It’s still just as capable, mind you, but has a little more ‘wow’ factor for those drivers looking to turn heads.
A wide variety of engines are available for the X4, including a powerful turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six in the range-topping X4 M.
X7
As the largest SUV in the BMW line-up, the X7 aims to bring some of the luxuries you’d expect from the 7 Series but in an upright, go-anywhere bodystyle. Certainly, with its uber-large front grilles it’s got plenty of presence, but it backs this design with a very comfortable interior.
It’s also got space for seven, meaning that if you want to move several people in effortless luxury, the X7 could be the car for you.
