The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer always stood out in the brand’s line-up. After all, a company famed for its saloons and performance cars wasn’t the first you’d expect to create a family-friendly MPV, designed with spaciousness and practicality in mind.
But BMW has stuck with the name and released a brand new 2 Series Active Tourer. It’s got a whole load of new features, so let’s dive in and see what it has to offer.
It’s got a whole new look
BMW hasn’t hung onto the upright style of the older 2 Series Active Tourer, instead adopting a more rugged, crossover-style appearance. It’s more in-keeping with the brand’s design as a whole, with the ultra-large kidney grilles present and correct at the front of the car.
Around the back, you may notice that the exhaust pipes of the 2 Series Active Tourer have been hidden, shunning the current method of fitting ‘fake’ pipes.
It’s packed with technology
BMW has really jammed the 2 Series Active Tourer with technology, ensuring that it feels fully up to date. In fact, it’ll be the first BMW model to gain the eighth-generation of the firm’s famous iDrive system, bringing tip-top usability and features.
One of the biggest changes here is the lack of a rotary controller. Previously a hallmark of BMW’s iDrive system, it has been removed in favour of a touchscreen and more voice-activated functions.
It’s still got an eye on practicality
Just as before, the 2 Series Active Tourer has been designed to offer plenty of space. In fact, the removal of that iDrive controller means that there’s now additional storage space beneath the centre armrest, while rear passengers benefit from plenty of knee room too.
When it comes to boot space, you’ve got a seats-up capacity of between 406 litres for plug-in hybrid models and 417 for regular models. That standard load area is the same on both models, mind you, as the additional space comes from under-floor storage.
Hybrid powertrains are set to join the line-up soon
As you might’ve guessed, the 2 Series Active Tourer will benefit from hybrid powertrains shortly. At launch, there will be two petrol engines - badged 220i and 223i - bringing a 1.5-litre engine with mild-hybrid tech and either 168bhp or 215bhp respectively. A 2.0-litre diesel with 148bhp will also be available.
The hybrids look set to join the line-up in summer 2022. Using a petrol engine with an electric motor at the rear, these models will boast all-wheel-drive and the ability to travel for around 50 miles on electric-only power.
It’s competitively priced
BMW is aware that this segment is competitive, which is reflected in the Active Tourer’s price. Set to go on sale in March 2022, the 2 Series Active Tourer will commence from £30,265 for the 220i, rising to £31,820 for the 218d. At the top of the range will be the 223i, priced from £32,715.
As yet, the prices for the plug-in hybrid models aren’t available, but expect an increase on the price of the petrol and diesel versions.
