Cupra is joining the electric car race with its new Born, bringing the brand into one of the most hotly-competed segments around. Sitting atop Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform means that the Born has the latest technology and practicality on its side, wrapped up in a recognisably ‘Cupra’ exterior.

It’s got a striking exterior design
As we’ve come to expect from Cupra, the Born exhibits a particularly head-turning look. Despite being on the same platform as cars like the Volkswagen ID.3, the Born looks completely different with its razor-sharp headlights and full-width rear light bar.
Of course, no Cupra would be complete without a host of copper-coloured accents and you’ll find these in areas like the front splitter.
It’s got plenty of performance on offer
Cupra always likes to put a sporty angle on its cars and that’s evident with the Born. Thanks to its electric powertrain producing 201bhp, it’ll manage the 0-60mph sprint in 7.1 seconds, but the instant delivery of torque means that this will no doubt feel quicker in the real world.
A relatively low centre of gravity looks to help the Born when cornering at greater speeds, too.
A decent range doesn’t restrict the Born to short trips
Cupra has kitted the Born out with a 58kWh battery to begin with and this is capable of helping it to travel for up to 263 miles between charges. Plus, the ability to charge at speeds of up to 120kW means that the Born’s battery levels can be taken from five to 80 per cent in just 35 minutes.
That said, if you connect to a regular 11kW wallbox, the Born can be fully recharged in a still-respectable six hours and 15 minutes.
More powertrain options are on the way
Cupra is set to add a range of powertrain options to the Born shortly. There will be 45kWh version which will bring a lower range but a lower price too, as well as a more distance-orientated 77kWh version for those that like to travel further afield.
It means that if this initial offering isn’t for you, there are further options on the way.
There’s plenty of standard equipment
The Born is priced from £33,735 and bring a host of standard equipment from the off. Highlights include 18-inch wheels, a 12-inch infotainment setup and adaptive cruise control. Standard-fit bucket seats give the cabin of the Born a sporty look, too.
Move up to V2-specification cars and you’ll find features such as 19-inch alloys and tinted windows added, while top-tier V3 cars gain 20-inch alloys and 12-way adjustable front seats.
