Toyota has revealed its new Aygo X as its next-generation city car, boasting more rugged styling and a big uplift in terms of technology.
Toyota first introduced the Aygo in 2005 and since then it’s been a model co-developed and built alongside Citroen and Peugeot. However, with the French brands not committing to a new model, Toyota is now going at it alone.
Though the Aygo already stood out, this new model – which gains an ‘X’ on the name, pronounced ‘cross’ – takes things further with its rugged styling pack, full LED lighting and funky range of colour schemes. These include two-tone themes named after spices, including Ginger and Juniper, with the bold colour schemes also extending to the model’s interior too.
Now based on Toyota’s GA-B platform, which also underpins the Yaris and Yaris Cross, it’s longer, wider and taller than before – helping to give it greater presence out on the road. Like before, you can have it with a fabric canvas roof, while large alloy wheels up to 18 inches are fitted, while those greater dimensions mean this new city car offers far more interior space than its predecessor – the boot growing by 60 litres to 231 litres, while Toyota promises additional room for those in the front and rear.
While many city cars are either being discontinued or making the switch to electric, Toyota is sticking with conventional petrol power – using a 71bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine that’s relatively similar to that on the outgoing car. Alongside a six-speed manual gearbox, Toyota will offer a new CVT automatic transmission, and though full efficiency figures are yet to be confirmed, the brand is aiming for around 60mpg and sub-110g/km CO2 emissions.
Inside, the Aygo X gets a modern makeover, with a new nine-inch touchscreen being offered, including features like wireless Apple CarPlay, as well as various connected services and wireless smartphone charging.
No official prices have been announced, but the Aygo X is likely to start from around £14,000 when orders open next year.
