SUVs now play a hugely important part in Skoda’s range, and it’s the mid-size Karoq that’s proven the most successful.
Since its introduction in late 2017, Skoda has produced more than half a million examples, making it one of the more popular models in this segment.
To make sure it remains the leader in this class next to newer rivals like the Nissan Qashqai and Hyundai Tucson, Skoda has given it a welcome mid-life update. But what are the changes you need to look out for? Let’s take a look.
Revised design bringing it in-line with other Skodas
The outgoing Karoq still looks fresh, but nevertheless Skoda has introduced a range of design changes, further bringing the model in-line with the brand’s latest models, including the new Fabia and recently-updated Kodiaq.
So the Karoq now sports a wider, hexagonal grille as well as slimmer LED lights at both the front and rear. There’s also a new spoiler at the back, along with a range of new alloy wheel designs. Perhaps more noticeably, there are two new colours to choose from – the bright Phoenix Orange and Graphite Grey. As before, there will be a range of trims to choose from, including a racier-looking SportLine model.
Further technology
No mid-life update is complete if it doesn’t mean there’s more technology available to customers, and this Karoq is no different.
One key change is the addition of Matrix LED technology that aims to provide greater vision, with these lights working to filter the light around other traffic, and means you can leave the lights on full-beam. A raft of additional safety kit is also on offer, including an enhanced traffic sign recognition system, greater park assist functionality and further depth of vision in the blind spot monitoring feature.
Greater focus on sustainability
Sustainability is something many manufacturers are now taking particularly seriously, and it’s also something that’s on the minds of many customers.
That’s why Skoda has launched a new ‘Eco Pack’ for the updated Karoq, which focuses on using a range of vegan, recycled and reclaimed materials on the cabin. As part of this optional package, the seat covers are made of a vegan leather-like material, which is made of disposed plastic bottles.
Other interior changes to be aware of include enhanced LED ambient lighting and further decorative trim options across the range.
Additional standard equipment
The Karoq is already available with a wide range of standard equipment, including 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control and an eight-inch touchscreen to name just a few features. However, as part of this update Skoda has enhanced the list of equipment included.
It means all versions now come with smarter LED headlights, as well as a more modern eight-inch digital dial system, which replaces the analogue dials found on lower-spec versions of the current car.
Reduced emissions across the range
Though Skoda hasn’t introduced any electrified powertrains to the Karoq as part of this update, it has worked on improving the efficiency of the petrol and diesel engines already available.
This has been achieved in two ways – the first is through styling changes that reduce drag, including from side finlets and a larger rear spoiler. Secondly, Skoda has introduced a range of measures and modifications to its engines to help bring down nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide emissions across the range.
