Volvo has announced that its future cars will all come with built-in YouTube as the brand continues its partnership with Google.
The Swedish manufacturer has been working with the tech giant for a number of years, and was the first brand to integrate Google’s Android-based infotainment system into its cars – initially on the electric XC40 Recharge, but more recently it’s also launched on the refreshed XC60.
Designed particularly for EV owners to entertain themselves when they're plugged in charging, YouTube is the first video platform to be available in Volvo cars. The firm says it means ‘drivers can spend their charging break enjoying livestreams, news, shows and all the latest videos’.
The issue of safety has been addressed, too, as Volvo says videos will only be played when the car is completely stationary. Alongside YouTube integration, Volvo has also said customers will soon be able to download additional navigation and parking apps, such as Sygic and ParkWhiz.
The brand’s models will also feature Google Assistant integration for enhanced voice connectivity.
Henrik Green, chief product officer at Volvo Cars, said: “Allowing our customers to watch videos while charging or when waiting to pick up their children from school is part of our promise to make their lives better and more enjoyable.
“With YouTube and other major streaming services coming soon, our customers can enjoy their charging break instead of seeing it as just a hassle – making electric car ownership that bit easier.”
