New Ford Ranger Raptor arrives with petrol V6 power

Adventure-style pick-up has gained a load of new features

Ford has unveiled its new Ranger Raptor, bringing more performance and even more off-road tech to its adventure-style pick-up.

Chief among these changes is the fitment of a new 248bhp 3.0-litre V6 engine, which replaces the outgoing truck’s 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel. This new engine also brings a healthy 491Nm of torque.

The engine’s block has been made stronger than a traditional iron unit, while an anti-lag system - first developed for Ford’s GT supercar - has been fitted to ensure that throttle response is as sharp as possible. This system keeps the turbochargers spinning for three seconds after the driver takes their foot off the throttle, meaning that the engine is prepared should they get back on the gas again. Ford has stated that the older bi-turbo diesel will still be offered alongside this new petrol version, though.

The Raptor comes with a full-time four-wheel-drive system with an on-demand two-speed transfer case, while front and rear locking differentials should ensure that the Ranger can find its way across all types of terrain.

It’s also fitted with seven different drive modes to help tailor the car’s settings depending on the type of surfaces the truck is driving over.

This is linked with an electronically controlled active exhaust to change the Raptor’s noise - with four modes going from loud to quiet - to change how the truck sounds.

A fully upgraded suspension system has also been included. Said to be the most sophisticated ever fitted to a Raptor, it is filled with Teflon-infused oil that helps to reduce friction by around 50 per cent compared with the outgoing model.

Fox hardware is also used, but Ford’s engineers have tweaked it by adjusting the spring rates and ride height. As before, the Raptor receives a range of upgraded styling touches including flared wheel arches, a unique orange colour scheme and 17-inch alloy wheels shod in all-terrain tyres. Inside, there are sports seats and a leather heated steering wheel, among other features.

The Raptor will be the first of the next-generation Ranger models to arrive in the UK, with first deliveries expected in late summer 2022.
