Jeep is a brand that has always stayed true to what it was founded – producing capable and rugged 4x4s.
While the brand has unsurprisingly had to evolve over the years, introducing more crossovers, it’s still centred around SUVs, and that remains all it sells.
But Jeep’s line-up has become quite a lot more varied in recent years, not least thanks to the introduction of cleaner plug-in hybrid models. Here’s a look at what the Jeep range has to offer in 2022.
Renegade
Jeep’s most affordable model is the Renegade – a compact yet ultra-stylish crossover. Available with a choice of 1.0- and 1.3-litre petrol engines, these standard models are offered exclusively with front-wheel-drive, though still look rugged and capable thanks to their chunky styling.
If you want an ‘urban’ Jeep, it’s a great option thanks to its more compact dimensions and great visibility, while there’s still plenty of room in the interior if you have a family.
Renegade 4xe
The Renegade 4xe was Jeep’s first electrified model, and showcases how this American brand is continuing to remain relevant. Based on the regular Renegade, if you want a four-wheel-drive version of this crossover these days, the 4xe is your only option.
Available with a turbocharged 1.3-litre petrol engine combined with an electric motor, power outputs of 187bhp or 237bhp are available, while a 11.4kWh battery allows for 30-mile electric range. With ‘always on’ four-wheel-drive ability, the Renegade 4xe is a very capable model indeed.
Compass
Jeep’s newest model is a heavily reworked version of the mid-size Compass. A funky alternative to a Nissan Qashqai or Ford Kuga, the Compass is roomy, versatile and stylish thanks to its iconic Jeep styling cues.
This latest model is a huge step up compared to its predecessor, gaining a higher-quality cabin, a new 1.3-litre petrol engine and plenty of additional technology.
Compass 4xe
The Compass is another Jeep that benefits from electrification, as a new 4xe version is just arriving in showrooms. It shares the same powertrain as the Renegade, with strong performance on offer from the more powerful 237bhp model – 0-60mph takes just 7.1 seconds, in fact.
However, a 30-mile electric range is still promised, along with seriously low running costs – Jeep claiming more than 150mpg and sub-50g/km CO2 emissions. This 4xe is also especially good off-road, particularly if you go for the flagship Trailhawk model that features a range of additional go-anywhere driving modes for enhanced capability.
Wrangler
The most iconic of all Jeeps, the Wrangler is the one that’s closest to the original Willys Jeep. With its immediately recognisable styling, offering chunky and utilitarian looks, it stands out on the road like few others can.
Available in a two- or four-door guise, the Wrangler is ridiculously capable off-road and can go where many other cars can’t. Now available exclusively with a powerful 2.0-litre petrol engine, a plug-in hybrid could be introduced here at some point – it’s already on sale in other markets. Now better on tarmac than ever, the Wrangler is also brimmed with technology and equipment.
