Cupra has expanded the line-up of its sporty Leon hatchback and estate with more affordable engine options that will help to bring the cost of the car down.
Cupra introduced a sportier version of Seat’s Leon in 2021, but up until now the model has only been offered with a choice of powerful 2.0-litre petrol engines (developing either 242bhp or 296bhp), along with a 242bhp plug-in hybrid version.
Now, the performance firm is aiming to ‘deliver greater value and sophistication’ to its customers with the addition of some less powerful models for those wanting the sporty looks, but not necessarily the performance.
The first engine is one that’s already available in Seat’s Leon – a turbocharged 1.5-litre TSI engine developing 148bhp offered with the option of an automatic or manual gearbox.
The second engine being launched is a 187bhp 2.0-litre petrol, with this coming purely as an automatic.
To reflect these new engines, Cupra is also introducing lower trim levels, including V1 and V2 models. Generous equipment levels are still promised, however, with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED lights, keyless entry and a 12-inch touchscreen included.
Kai Vogler, vice-president for sales and marketing at Cupra, said: “The Cupra Leon is already a king on the road, but we’re always developing the vehicle to maximise the offering for our customers, making it more customisable and growing its sales targets.
“With the introduction of these engines, our ambition is to achieve big success with the Cupra Leon, as we have done with the Formentor.”
Prices for the updated Cupra Leon haven’t yet been announced, but expect a noticeable saving on the current starting price of £33,100 for the five-door hatch and £37,980 for the Estate. Orders will start to open for the updated range from early October.
