Considering the popularity of both the Fiesta and Focus, it shouldn’t have come as any huge surprise that a small Ford crossover was always going to prove a success.
And Ford’s Puma has done just that, regularly topping the sales charts in this class and appealing to a broad range of customers, not least families. But why is the Puma such a popular choice with the family market? Let’s take a look…
Practical interior
Though the Puma is no seven-seater, if you have a small family, it should prove to be more than roomy enough. It’s certainly far more spacious than a standard supermini like the Ford Fiesta or Vauxhall Corsa, too.
Even with its more coupe-like profile, adults or taller teens will be able to sit comfortably in the rear seats, while plenty of interior storage really helps to improve everyday usability.
The MegaBox is ideal for family life
That leads us on to boot space, as the Puma has a special trick up its sleeve in the form of a ‘MegaBox’. Sitting beneath the main boot floor, it’s essentially a further 80-litre storage box, and means that in total the Puma offers 456 litres of boot space – far more than what you get from a standard hatchback like Ford’s own Focus.
This MegaBox also has a removable liner, meaning that you can store muddy boots or dirty clothes in there without getting the rest of the car filthy.
Affordable to run
With the exception of the sporty ST model, all Pumas feature a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, featuring a mild-hybrid system that offers 20 per cent more responsiveness, as well as 10 per cent greater efficiency.
This means that the Puma will be a very affordable option to run, which will be useful for families wanting to keep an eye on costs. With this system, Ford says it can return up to an impressive 52.3mpg, while CO2 emissions of 122g/km are particularly low for a car of this type.
Great fun to drive
When it comes to a family car, it’s important to make sure that you’re still buying something that you actually want to drive, rather than just choosing something purely for practical reasons.
So if you want something that’s a bit more sensible but will still put a smile on your face, the Puma is a superb choice. In fact, it’s actually the best crossover to drive in its class, with sharp steering, impressive agility and punchy engines making it a great choice. You can also choose the racier ST model if you want more thrills, with this using the same 197bhp, 1.5-litre petrol engine that you get from Ford’s excellent Fiesta ST hot hatch.
Well-equipped and affordable
With prices starting from £21,835, the Puma offers strong value for money for customers, while even the more stylish ST-Line version is available for under £24,000. Put this in finance terms and it means the Puma is available from around £250 per month on a PCP finance agreement.
You also still get plenty of equipment for your money, such as 17-inch alloy wheels, a heated windscreen, keyless start and an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as access to FordPass connected services.
