BMW has one of the most extensive range of cars available today, with a model available to suit most tastes and budgets.
However, buyers now have another option available them in the form of the 2 Series Gran Coupé. It’s the first model of its type to come from BMW, and offers a more practical solution to the regular 2 Series as well as increased style next to the 1 Series hatchback it’s based upon.
It arrives in showrooms shortly, and will be a great model to test drive. But here’s what you need to know about it before getting behind the wheel…
What engines are available?
BMW offers three distinctly different engines on it new 2 Series Gran Coupé.
The range begins with a 218i – a 138bhp 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that enables a 0-60mph time of 8.5 seconds. It will also return up to 47.1mpg, with CO2 emissions of just 123g/km.
If you’d prefer a diesel option, the only choice is the 220d. That’s no bad thing as it uses a punchy 187bhp 2.0-litre diesel unit that allows for a 0-60mph time of 7.3 seconds. But it’s also efficient – returning up to 56.5mpg, with low CO2 emissions of 110g/km. If you’re looking for a great balance of performance and low running costs, this is the one to go for.
BMW is offering a performance version of the 2 Series Gran Coupé from launch, too – the M235i. It’s the only option available with all-wheel-drive (the rest sends power to the front wheels), and utilises a powerful 302bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine. This means 0-60mph time of 7.5 seconds and a top speed limited to 155mph. It’ll still return a claimed 37mpg, too.
What trim levels are available?
Three trim offerings are available, with prices and equipment highlights as follows.
Sport – from £25,815
Standard equipment includes an 8.8-inch touchscreen, 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and front and rear parking sensors. It also comes with cruise control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and automatic lights and wipers.
M Sport – from £28,315
This sportier-looking version brings larger 18-inch alloy wheels, a bigger 10.25-inch touchscreen with BMW’s ‘Intelligent Personal Assistant’ voice control system, leather upholstery and a revised bodykit. It also features heated front seats, sports suspension and additional gloss black elements.
M235i xDrive – from £37,255
The top-spec sports model features revised 18-inch alloy wheels, a dual-exit exhaust, sharper styling, sports seats and Cerium Grey detailing. It also features a sportier suspension setup, better brakes and all-wheel-drive, too.
What about personalisation?
If you’re wanting to make your 2 Series Gran Coupé personal to you, there are no shortage of options available to do so. A good range of colours are there to choose from, with Snapper Rocks Blue and Melbourne Red being two of the most distinctive. Various alloy wheel designs are available as well, up to 19 inches in size.
There are also plenty of options packs available, including a Tech Pack, which brings adaptive LED headlights, a head-up display and self-parking, for £1,500. If you want to jazz your M Sport model up too, then we’d opt for the £2,200 Plus pack, which adds a rear spoiler, 18-inch alloys, tinted glass and a harman/kardon sound system.
More conventional options are available, too, including adaptive suspension (£500), a heated steering wheel (£150) and a spare wheel £150).
